Job/Fellowship Reference: UI/643/2020

The Research Institute for Volcanology and Risk Assessment (IVAR) is calling for the award of 1 (one) PhD Research Grant, in the area of Geology, under the FCT Research Grants Regulation. The doctoral scholarship aims to finance the students’ research activities to obtain a doctoral degree in Geology at the University of the Azores. The duration of the scholarship is, as a rule, annual, renewable up to a maximum of four years (48 months).

The main objective of the work plan to be developed is to model the thermodynamic conditions of geothermal reservoirs in different degassing areas of the Azores archipelago. This work intends to reinforce the gas geochemistry component of the IVAR, namely in what concerns understanding of hydrothermal fumarolic systems. The scientific orientation of the activities to be carried out within the scope of the work plan leading to the obtaining of the academic degree of doctor of Geology will be under the responsibility of Professor Fátima Viveiros, without impeding any other possible co-supervisors.

The candidate should hold a Master's degree in the scientific areas of Geology, Chemistry or in related areas, not have benefited from a PhD scholarship, or a PhD in business context, directly funded by the FCT, regardless of its duration. National citizens or citizens of other European Union states, as well as citizens of third States, who must have a valid residence permit at Portugal at the start of the scholarship, can apply.

The call is opened between September 28th 5pm (Lisbon time) and October 20th 2020. Applications and supporting documents for the application must be submitted by email to ivar@azores.gov.pt.
