PhD Research Grant in the area of Geology, Volcanology, at the University of the Azores

1 PhD position in Volcanology at the Research Institute for Volcanology and Risk Assessment (IVAR) - University of the Azores

The main goal of the work plan to be developed is to strengthen IVAR (Research Institute in Volcanology and Risks Assessment) current capacity to assessing and monitoring volcanic risks, and to supporting crisis management in the Azores, by developing, implementing and using remote sensing-based approaches, methods and data. The specific aim of this doctoral project is to develop an integrated system able to support the monitoring of volcanic areas based on the synergistic and accurate use of multispectral, hyperspectral, radar (SAR) and LIDAR data, whether obtained by satellite, aerial or terrestrial sensors. This PhD project will also imply a holistic approach (multi-sensor, multi-resolution) based on the synergistic use of the most advanced and accurate geospatial data processing and modelling approaches, methods and techniques. Solid knowledge is required in the development of remote sensing applications in the Earth Sciences domain (in terms of data acquisition, processing and analysis), together with an advanced domain of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Statistics. Proficiency in JavaScript and/or Python programming languages is considered a preferential condition.

The scientific orientation of the activities to be carried out within the scope of the work plan leading to the obtaining of the academic degree of doctor of Geology, specialty of Volcanology, will be under the responsibility of Doctor Artur José Freire Gil, without impeding any other possible co-supervisors.

The applicants should have a Master's degree in Earth Sciences, Geospatial Sciences, Comuting Sciences or Engineering, should not have benefited from a PhD scholarship, or a PhD in business context, directly funded by the FCT, regardless of its duration.

National citizens or citizens of other European Union states, as well as citizens of third States, with a valid residence permit at Portugal at the start of the scholarship, can apply.

The Grant is funded by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) for a maximum of 4 years, including tuition and a monthly stipend of 1.064,00€

The call is open until October 31st, 2021. Applications and supporting documents for the application must be submitted by email to [email protected].
