Resumo

The Azores archipelago is located in the North Atlantic Ocean where the American, Eurasian and Nubia lithospheric plates meet forming the Azores Triple Junction. Its nine islands rise from the socalled Azores Plateau, a distinctive triangular area of the oceanic crust which anomalous thickness is believed to be related with the presence of a deep mantle plume.
This complex geodynamic setting is responsible for the significant seismic and volcanic activity registered in the archipelago, including permanent degassing processes, among other natural hazards such as landslides, floods and tsunamis.
Graciosa is the northernmost island of the Azores Central Group. With 60 km² and altitudes lower than 400 meters, has two active volcanic complexes of distinctive nature. The most recent volcanic eruption took place about 2000 years ago. It was a strombolian eruption centered roughly in the middle of the island that gave rise to the extensive lava flow where the IS42 Station was installed, despite being Initially planned (CTBT) to São Miguel Island. Site selection, surveying and project design were initiated in 2006. Since its certification, in December 2010, IS42 has been running continuously, contributing to the CTBT verification regime, and to monitoring natural hazards, such as extreme atmospheric events.
